The body of BSP founder and prominent Dalit leader Kanshiram, who pitch-forked dalits to the centrestage of power politics in Uttar Pradesh, has been consigned to flames in New Delhi in the presence of top political leaders and a huge number of his supporters. Two of his sisters and a brother and some other relatives were also present with police protection ordered by Delhi High Court after the family sought his body for the last rites after a post-mortem, suspecting foul play in his death.

Seven accused in Mumbai train blasts case retract statement
In a set back to the prosecution in the 11th July serial blasts case, seven accused have retracted their confession before a special court saying they were taken under duress by police.The accused are Faizal Shaikh, Muzammil Shaikh, Tanvir Ahmed Ansari, Mohammed Kamal Ansari, Ethesham Siddiqui, Sohail Shaikh and Zamir Ahmed Ansari.The stand of the accused to resile their statements given to the police comes 10 days after Mumbai police claimed that they had cracked the train blasts case.

Chikungunya brought under control in TN: govt
The Tamil Nadu government has claimed that chikungunya had been brought under control by adopting a slew of measures, including anti-mosquito control, which would continue till no cases were reported in the state. “From over 23,893 cases of Chikungunya reported in June, it has reduced to just 226 cases this month after a series of measures initiated by the Health Department,” Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary L K Tripathy told reporters in Chennai on Monday.

J&K demands Rs 25 cr package for settlement of migrants
Jammu and Kashmir government has demanded a Rs 25 crore package from the Centre for permanent settlement of migrants in Nowshehra sector of Rajouri district. The demand was made by Minister of State for Public Health Engineering R C Sharma in a memorandum submitted to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil during a meeting in Srinagar on Sunday, an official spokesman said.

Coffin scam hearing deferred till 16th Oct
The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing in the Kargil Coffingate scam till 16th October, after authorities pleaded that the investigations were still under way.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal allowed the CBI’s request and adjourned the hearing till 16th October. Earlier, the matter was listed for hearing on 29th September.
During the last hearing, the apex court had pulled up the investigating agency for not doing enough to bring the culprits to book.

35 Dengue cases reported in Haryana, Chandigarh
After Delhi, the dreaded dengue has struck Haryana with one person dying of the suspected disease and 33 cases being confirmed, two dengue cases have been confirmed in Chandigarh also.

Bechu Rehaman, the key accused in the Sabarimala temple priest assault case and a small time Malayalam film and television actor, has surrendered before the police in Kochi. Congress to give Koda outside support
The Congress has formally ruled out joining the Madhu Koda government in Jharkhand and decided to support it from outside, the Congress national leadership had declared outside support well before the Koda ministry was formed.

Indian Navy sacks captain of INS Prahar
The Indian Navy has sacked the captain of the warship INS Prahar for “navigational error” after it sank following a collision with a ship off the Goa coast five months ago, according to Ministry of Defence sources.
The navy conducted a court martial of captain Cdr Yogesh Tripathi and found him guilty of “navigational error”, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said in Mumbai.
Tripathi, was tried by court martial and dismissed from service.

Six shot dead in Jammu and Kashmir
Militants shot dead six persons, including a village headman and a woman, in separate incidents while security forces recovered some arms and ammunition from a passenger vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir since Sunday night.
Nazir Ahmad Wani, a headman, was shot at and critically injured by militants at Khushanpora-Nagbal in Shopian area of Pulwama district last night, officials said.
Wani was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Kalam visits Kovilur Mutt
President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, who visited the Mutt last night, has visited the Kovilur Mutt in Kovilur, which runs Vedic school and another where ‘Nadhaswaram’ is taught. The President listened to Vedic chants and Tamil hymns ‘Thirupugazh’ and ‘Thiruvasagam’ in praise of Lord Subramania and Shiva, presented by children.
He also asked ‘Nadhaswaram’ learners to play Thiagaraja ‘keerthana’. Impressed by their performance, Dr Kalam patted them. He also got himself photographed with them.
